Admin: switch of eljay identities.

September 25th, 2011 (01:07 pm)

This would all be so much easier if I had a credit card.

However, in the absence of same, an announcement: I have switched LJ identities from carla_scribbles to thatyourefuse. There are a number of reasons for this, ranging from "wanting to be consistent across platforms" to "I don't use that pen name anymore," and all in all it's really a little past time, so anyone still reading me principally on eljay, please adjust your flists accordingly.

The carla_scribbles journal will remain up, for purposes of not breaking anyone's links.

One day I will post about something that is not bitching about vidding. (I may even go back to bitching about writing. At some point. Eventually. Maybe. But I've had to drop out of [community profile] kinked and I'm feeling very dispirited about it and the answer is to actually try and write something but it's going to HURT to stretch those muscles again.)

But having started redoing "Jacob Marley's Chain" so that it actually has a POV... I am running HARD up against the fact that Verse 1 (and possibly Verse 2) really, really needs to be about something that, by definition, my POV character is being shut out of through most of the narrative. (It would also be nice if I knew anyone who'd seen the source, because I feel like the problem would be easier to communicate if I did. I mean, if I were making a S6 Spooks vid from Adam's POV, and I said "I feel like I need to get the Ros thing in before the bridge, but I don't know how that's possible" -- not that the situations are all that analogous --)

Possibly this is why people storyboard instead of jumping in all willy-nilly. I don't know.

things it is better to know sooner than later

September 22nd, 2011 (06:20 pm)

1. The more obscure and full of plot your story is, the simpler and easier to follow your narrative had damn well better be, apparently.

2. If you really like something in your first attack on a subject, it is going to be completely wrong for the story you're trying to tell.

3. One needs a better reason for not immediately revealing one's POV character than "late POV reveals are cool." Especially if you have another character who is liable to muscle in and make it all about him while you're being all mysterious and withholding. (Maybe the next one...)

Therefore, presented without comment, the abortive 0.5th draft of the vid I am now ground-up revidding, for purposes of I really loved that opening, god dammit.

Query for any vidding people I happen to know:

September 20th, 2011 (09:59 am)

When it comes down to a choice between a clip that looks right but has no movement in it whatsoever -- seriously, you'd think it was a cap -- and one that looks wrong but is on the same general theme and does at least move, does one:

A: use Clip 1 -- it just sort of sits there, but it's exactly the right shot
B: use Clip 2 -- the lighting's wrong, the point in the source it's pulled from is wrong, and the amount of internal movement in it is actually completely wrong, thematically, but on a pure rhythmic level it does flow a bit better.
C: go trawling through the source for another clip with at least some of the virtues of both

Of course, the ideal thing to do would be D: use Clip 1 and add a bit of a slow zoom to it, but I haven't even been doing this for a week and I am already so sick of the phrase "I don't think you can do that in WLMM."

Bah.

I am just under four seconds into my first proper vid and I have successfully made someone look up on the beat.

OH MY GOD, I KNOW WHY PEOPLE DO THIS.

So, uh, in the interests of working out what all the buttons do on the video editing software (you thought I was blowing smoke, didn't you) -- I actually made a thing.

N.b. this is an extreme first attempt at video editing, involves gratuitous high-contrast black-and-white, and is under ninety seconds long -- but hot damn if I'm not a bit proud of myself anyway.

I started the learning curve on three separate programs with this, and I can report that Audacity is a dream (although I haven't started fucking very much with the settings yet), VirtualDub likewise (although ditto) and Windows Live Movie Maker -- well -- it could be worse.

Next up: teaching myself to cut on the beat.

... welp, it's finally happened.

I have had the idea that necessitates me learning to vid.

It involves a number of obscure, difficult, and often deliberately unpleasant sources, and I do not know that anyone other than me is ever going to watch it -- but for damn sure no one but me is ever going to make it. And I fucking well want it to be made.

I have the song. I have access to a surprising amount of the footage. All I need is about three years' experience.

Sooo, that's my resolution for next year. And the tag end of this one, obviously.

*whimpers*

They just played Neko Case's cover of this in Starbucks, which was awfully pretty but made me actually physically need to go find this version and listen to it about five times in close succession:
